Check the forecast closer to travel. El Niño creates the conditions for extreme weather, but not every day or every week. A month-by-month awareness is useful; obsessing over forecasts six months out is less so. Check weather services two to three weeks before you travel.
Book flexible travel insurance. Ensure your policy covers extreme weather disruption, trip curtailment, and — for the Caribbean — hurricane. Read the small print before you travel, not when you need to claim.
